The Queensland Institute (QI) was proud to collaborate with Asia University’s College of Management in Taichung, Taiwan, to deliver a customised workshop designed to strengthen English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) program delivery.

Delivered by Fiona Wiebusch, Co-Founder and Director of Teacher Development, the session focused on enhancing EMI program evaluation by building on the excellent collaborative practices already established in the College, such as regular peer observation and review opportunities.

The workshop, Principles in Practice: Optimising Teacher Observations in Higher Education, provided participants with practical tools and evidence-based strategies to refine their observation processes. Drawing on international case studies and best practices, the session empowered lecturers to foster reflective teaching and improve student outcomes.

Key highlights included:

  1. Effective Observation Frameworks: Attendees explored pre-observation planning, observation techniques, and methods for delivering empathetic, constructive feedback.

  2. Global Perspectives: Case studies from Vietnam and Australia offered insights into developing sustainable observation programs.

  3. Practical Skills for Educators: The interactive format encouraged collaboration and equipped lecturers with actionable approaches to apply in their classrooms.

The visit to Asia University (AU) was particularly meaningful as Fiona reconnected with alumni from The Queensland Institute’s online Lecture Ready: Enhancing EMI and CLIL in Higher Education training programs over the years. It was inspiring to hear their success stories about implementing and adapting their EMI approaches to support diverse learner groups in Taiwan.

Asia University is making meaningful strides in developing its EMI programs, and it was an honour to support their dedicated approach to innovation in the College of Management. This collaboration underscores the value of customised training in fostering sustainable change that promotes reflective practice in higher education.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Professor Chen and our AU colleagues for their tremendous support of this initiative. We look forward to continuing our collaboration into 2025 and beyond.

This initiative was proudly sponsored by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education in partnership with The Australian Office Taiwan (Austrade).
