Equipping Future Educators with AI-Smart Design Skills
Guest Lecture: Exploring AI Accessibility and Accountability in Instructional Design
15 November 2025 I The Queensland Institute
Guest Educator, Tim Magoffin (Centre) presents to our future teachers.
Student-teachers from Hong Kong recently joined a guest lecture at The Queensland Institute on AI accessibility and accountability in instructional design for the English language classroom. As AI tools continue to transform education, it’s vital for tomorrow’s global educators to explore how to use them thoughtfully and effectively.
Insights from a TESOL Expert
We were delighted to welcome Tim Magoffin from ITaLI at The University of Queensland, who led an engaging and practical session tailored specifically for materials designers in English-medium contexts. Through his strong TESOL background, Tim guided participants through the range of AI tools now available in education, and the key considerations — from accessibility to ethics — when integrating those tools in diverse classroom settings.
Why AI Matters for Instructional Design
In today’s educational landscape, AI tools offer powerful possibilities: from content creation to visual design, from differentiated materials to learner-centred tools. Yet with that power comes responsibility. During the lecture, Tim emphasised the importance of transparency, accuracy, and learner accessibility when using AI-generated materials — so that educational quality and integrity remain front and centre.
Spotlight Tool: Napkin AI for Visual Design
One highlight of the session was introducing Napkin AI. This tool allows educators to generate clear, specific flow charts and infographics for presentations within minutes — a meaningful time-saver that supports clarity and learner comprehension. For busy educators, tools like this can significantly streamline the design process without sacrificing quality.
Bridging Innovation and Ethical Practice
At The Queensland Institute, we believe innovation should always be balanced with ethical and pedagogically sound practice. Guest lectures like this help our participants ground their enthusiasm for emerging technology in the principles of good teaching. We’re proud to offer opportunities for future educators to build capacity in AI-enhanced instructional design — responsibly and creatively.
