Inclusive Teaching in Focus: Supporting Chilean English Language Teachers

Supporting Primary and Secondary Educators across Chile

31 March 2025 I The Queensland Institute

School teachers join us online from across Chile!

In partnership with Programa Inglés Abre Puertas (PIAP) and the Chilean Ministry of Education, The Queensland Institute recently delivered a practical and engaging online workshop on Inclusive Education in the English Language Classroom.

The session focused on Universal Design for Learning (UDL)—an approach that helps teachers reach all students through flexible methods of engagement, expression, and representation. Inclusive education aims to ensure every learner, regardless of background or ability, can actively participate in meaningful learning.

Strong National Reach

Designed for Chilean public school English teachers, the workshop saw 140 registrations in just 24 hours, with participants joining live on the night from regions including Arica, Calama, Huechuraba, La Serena, Santiago metropolitan, and more.

Putting Practice First

Led by experienced trainer Vicki Bos, the session modelled practical classroom strategies that teachers can adapt immediately. All survey respondents agreed the workshop was valuable for their professional growth.

Teachers particularly appreciated:

  • strategies to promote student choice and differentiation

  • creative use of familiar tools like Google Docs and Miro board

  • inclusive classroom mapping activities

  • low-prep games that build emotional connection and language use

  • visual and movement-based techniques to engage diverse learners

One participant shared:

“I really appreciate that I was given actual activities to use and the fact that we used them during the workshop was the best because it helps me get some idea of how my students would feel and what I could do with each class group.”

Another added:

“Loved it. Especially because the main goal was to share activities. I feel I repeat the ones I have in rotation all the time… it’s important to do them to get a feeling of them, and that’s kinda impossible when researching alone.”

Vicki’s interactive facilitation style was also recognised:

“[Vicki] got my attention during the whole class, as she used very interactive activities and tools to practise what she taught.”

Fiona Wiebusch, Co-Founder at The Queensland Institute, also shared:

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see such strong engagement from educators across Chile. Our goal is to make inclusive education feel achievable, and to give teachers the confidence to use practical tools that support every learner. We’re grateful to PIAP for their leadership and commitment to online teacher development.”

Strength through Collaboration

We extend our thanks to Programa Inglés Abre Puertas (PIAP)—an initiative of the Chilean Ministry of Education dedicated to strengthening English teaching across the public school system. PIAP leads key projects in teacher training, curriculum innovation, and international collaboration.

The Queensland Institute offers professional development that is inclusive, practical, and globally informed. Explore our online and in-person training programs HERE or get in touch with Co-Founders, Philippa and Fiona, via EMAIL to discuss opportunities for collaboration.
