Fostering Excellence in EMI Lecture Delivery in the Era of AI
QI Collaborates with University Partners in New Taipei City, Taiwan
29 November 2024 I The Queensland Institute
In November 2024, The Queensland Institute (QI) partnered with Lunghwa University of Science and Technology (LHU) to deliver a transformative workshop series at their modern campus in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Now in its second year, this collaboration continues to empower lecturers to enhance English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education, with a focus on AI and active learning strategies.
This in-person visit complemented a year of successful online training programs, emphasising practical, tailored professional development to tackle the challenges of teaching EMI courses in the AI era.
Active Learning in the AI Era
The workshop series, "Active Learning in the AI Era: Digital Response Tools," explored innovative approaches to foster authentic learning while maintaining academic integrity in an AI-driven educational landscape.
Led by QI Co-Founder, Fiona Wiebusch, the sessions highlighted practical strategies such as real-time learner engagement and the use of interactive platforms like Padlet in lectures.
"Active learning in the AI era can feel like teaching students to drive in a world of self-driving cars, yet it allows educators to see real learning and engagement firsthand,"
Fiona explained, emphasising the value of developing critical thinking skills and observing students' progress directly in the classroom.
Providing opportunities for student interaction in lectures is also incredibly beneficial for English language development in higher education courses.
QI Alumni Showcasing Innovation
The visit, sponsored by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education and the Australian Government Office in Taipei (Austrade), provided opportunities for QI to reconnect with LHU alumni from our EMI programs.
A highlight of the collaboration was an LHU lecturer showcase where participants presented innovative practices and student outcomes, inspired by QI’s training. Observing these tangible results reinforced the transformative impact of our shared efforts.
Collaborative Approaches for the Future
QI and LHU’s long-standing partnership exemplifies the power of co-designed professional development programs to meet the unique needs of EMI lecturers.
