Enhancing English Speaking and Reading Skills in Vietnam

Supporting Primary and Secondary English Language Teachers

21 February 2025 I The Queensland Institute

English teachers joined us from Bình Thuận province.

How can teachers help students build confidence in speaking and reading in English while meeting national curriculum goals?

This question was at the heart of a recent professional development event in Bình Thuận province, Vietnam, where more than 70 primary and secondary school teachers gathered to explore innovative teaching strategies for the English Language classroom.

Aligned with the 2018 General Education Curriculum, the workshop series focused on practical, and principled approaches to developing students’ English proficiency in engaging and meaningful ways.

Strengthening Teaching Practices through Collaboration

Hosted by the Department of Education and Training (DoET) Bình Thuận province, the workshop featured expert facilitators Ms. Le Than Ngan (Anna) and Mr. Phan Trong Khoi, alongside international guest speaker Fiona Wiebusch, Co-Founder at The Queensland Institute.

Joining virtually from Australia, Fiona led the featured session Interaction Matters: Principles to Promote Speaking in Primary and Secondary English Classrooms. The session introduced five key principles and emphasised strategies to foster spoken interaction. Participants explored practical activities designed to:

  • Encourage students to speak with confidence

  • Maximise engagement through structured discussions and warm-up activities

  • Integrate speaking practice within the curriculum

  • Utilise digital response tools to enhance skills development, inside and outside the classroom

Mr Khoi’s engaging warm up session and Ms Ngan’s high-energy, high-impact reading sessions were the real highlights of the day, making use of minimal resources for maximum learning.

We extend our sincere thanks to Ms. Le Than Ngan for coordinating this enriching and impactful event. It is a privilege to collaborate with such dedicated educators.
